Niagara’s patented cycloid action
The beginning of Niagara’s patented cycloid action dates back to the 1920s in the coal fields of Canada. The coal miners discovered that by leaning against a mining machine, they could get immediate relief for aching backs and joints. The Wettlaufer Brothers were inventors, and when they heard about this they began researching this revolutionary new ‘process’.

Early Beginnings
Owen K. Murphy comes across the cycloid action technology in 1948, just after World War II. Drawing on his experience with the Medical Corps during the war, he immediately recognizes its therapeutic potential. Convinced of its promise, he acquires the patent and, in 1949, establishes Niagara Therapy, setting the stage for a new era in in-home therapy products
Early 1950’s
Startup & International Expansion
Niagara Therapy company is formally established and begins producing exclusive cyclo-massage therapy products, quickly expanding internationally to a dozen countries
1952
The Niagara Research Institute is born
The Niagara Research Institute was created to fund research into the benefits of cycloid vibration therapy (CVT)
1954
Murphy joins forces with Dr. Ed Connor to create, what became known as, Fairyland Centres
Owen Murphy and Dr. Ed Connor created the first Fairyland Centre in Pennsylvania to help children with special needs. They designed oversized toys—like trains and pirate ships—with Niagara Therapy’s Cycloid Vibration Therapy built in, blending therapy with play. The Centres quickly spread across the U.S., earning Murphy and Connor humanitarian awards, and became important hubs for children with conditions such as Autism, Cerebral Palsy, and Muscular Dystrophy.

Niagara Therapy is established in Canada, with Ultrassage becoming the official & exclusive Canadian distributor, manufacturing Niagara’s Massage Chairs & Adjustable Beds in Montreal.
Niagara is selected as the official therapy equipment provider for the Olympic Games
Niagara Therapy is selected as the official therapy equipment provider for the Olympic Games held in Lake Placid & Moscow in 1980, & Sarajevo & Los Angeles in 1984, further establishing its reputation in professional sports and rehabilitation
Celebrity TV Show Host Réal Giguère Becomes Niagara’s Spokesperson
Réal Giguère becomes the official spokesperson for Niagara Cyclomassage products, also known as Ultrassage Niagara Therapy, in Quebec. That year, he appeared in a televised commercial broadcast on french national TV, where he promoted the benefits of Niagara products. This marked a significant moment in raising brand awareness for Niagara in Quebec.
